ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

Earth is a planet born of fire. For billions of years, volcanoes have shaped the world we know, from the continents to the air we breathe and even life itself. With more than 500 active volcanoes, the planet is bursting at the seams with these forces of creation.

Join intrepid explorer and National Geographic photographer Carsten Peter as he dodges boulders at the edge of an active volcano in Indonesia, descends to a boiling lava lake in Vanuatu and crosses the surreal mineral fields of Ethiopia. Then travel to the ghost town of Pompeii and witness the devastating power of the 2018 Kilauea eruption in Hawaii.

This is a tale of science, culture and thrilling adventure, and the story of volcanoes is the story of the planet's creation, and the story of us.

THE DOME EXPERIENCE

Volcanoes up close and personal, with molten worlds and exploding craters surrounding you on our 65-foot dome screen. Feel the heat of a lava lake from the crater's edge and watch rocks seem to explode into the audience.

Sound and Score
With 20,000 watts of Dolby Atmos sound, you'll hear every eruption, rumble and roar fill the dome around you. The film features an original score by Daniel Sadowski, with sound design by George Flores and sound mix by Brian Eimer.

Seating and Viewing
Like IMAX and premium cinemas, the dome has a visual sweet spot near the center of the room. Seats toward the outer edges and corners have steeper viewing angles and a less balanced image. To experience the film as intended, arrive early and choose seats near the middle of the theatre.

Seating is first-come, first-served, so late arrivals may end up in edge seating with a compromised viewing angle.

WHAT YOU'LL DISCOVER

Never-Before-Seen Footage
Unique footage from the 2018 Kilauea eruption in Hawaii, captured as it happened.

Lava Lakes and Burning Craters
Descend into the lava lakes of Ambrym in Vanuatu and stand at the edge of Indonesia's Sinabung and Dukono, the latter erupting continuously since 1933.

From Africa to Pompeii
Explore Ethiopia's acid ponds, geysers and mineral deposit fields, and the strange black lava of Tanzania's Ol Doinyo Lengai. Then walk the streets of Pompeii, buried by Vesuvius almost 2,000 years ago.

Destruction That Builds
Learn how volcanoes create nutrient-rich soils and diverse ecosystems, and dive underwater to see volcanoes rising from the sea.
